Croydon High School is seeking an inspirational and visionary Teacher of Classics to lead our thriving Classics Department on a maternity cover basis.
The role
This is an exciting time to join us, as Classical subjects are growing in popularity and the department is entering a period of expansion and innovation. With increasing pupil uptake and the opportunity to develop new courses, this role offers a unique chance to shape the strategic direction of the department and build on its strong tradition of academic excellence.
We are looking for a dedicated leader who will bring fresh energy and vision to the teaching of our subjects. The successful candidate will confidently manage the team, continue to grow pupil engagement, and sustain the high level of academic and enrichment success for which the department is known. Experience teaching up to A Level and contributing to a successful KS5 department is essential.
Classics at Croydon High School
The Classics Department is a vibrant, supportive team, currently comprising a Head of Department and a full-time teacher. Pupils study Latin from Years 6–9, alongside introductions to Ancient Greek and Classical Civilisation. At GCSE and A Level, students can take Latin, Classical Civilisation, and Classical Greek, following stimulating programmes that challenge and inspire.
Lessons are supported by a dedicated, well-resourced classroom and modern digital tools, including iPads, interactive whiteboards, and laptops. Beyond the classroom, students enjoy immersive trips to Greece, Sicily, and Naples, theatre visits, competitions, and a thriving Classical Society, bringing the ancient world to life.
The department’s success is reflected in the number of students progressing to study Classics and related fields at top universities, including Russell Group institutions.
